Inspired by gourmet flavors yet crafted from basic pantry staples, this fresh, no-cook approach - topping combines sliced onions with balsamic vinegar, fennel seeds, dried chili, and a blend of my favorite dry spices.
It's cost-effective, simple to use, and brings an extra touch of flair to sandwiches, burgers, bowls, and more. Enjoy bold flavors without the fancy price tag.
Total Estimated Cost: ~$2.40
This batch makes roughly 1 cup of topping (depending on onion water content), which should provide about 6–8 servings as a sandwich topping or side.
Balsamic Onion Topping
Ingredients
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/2 tsp garlic granules
1/2 tsp dried onion flakes
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp fennel seeds
1/4 tsp salt
1 small dried red chili
You'll need a large glass jar with a lid.
Method
Finely chop the dried chili and place it into a clean glass jar.
Add the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and all the remaining dry seasonings to the jar. Whisk well until fully combined.
Add the thinly sliced onions. Use a teaspoon to mix thoroughly, making sure to coat the onions by spooning the marinade over them.
Let sit for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to keep the onions well-coated and help them soften.
It’s ready to use as a flavorful topper and perfect for:
Sandwiches, wraps, and grain bowls
Roasted veggies and quick dinners
Boards, bites, and entertaining
Storage Notes
This is a no-cook recipe, so the onions are fresh and full of flavor. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator it only gets better as it sits. Store in the fridge and use within 5 days. Chances are, they’ll be gone before then!
