Start-Up Support for Home Cooks

Hello my name is Rany,

"In 2017, I launched Munchie Jacks® a Cottage Food cookie business started in my home kitchen. What began as a small operation quickly grew into a successful brand, landing vendor partnerships with Whole Foods Market, Google (Mountain View) and New Leaf Community Market.

My Cookie Journey

Starting a business any business is a challenge. But if there's a dream stirring inside you, I believe it's worth pursuing. In 2016, something was quietly brewing within me, it was something I had created for my family that felt too good to keep to myself: my cookies.

While working full-time, I began asking my coworkers and even a manager to try them. I had neighbors and friends try them too. I had no plan, no pitch just a lot of curiosity and passion. It was all very experimental and completely self-funded, like all Cottage Food Operations (CFOs). That’s the beauty of a CFO: it offers flexibility and room to grow at your own pace. But it’s true you only get out what you put in.

Everything about the process was scrappy but organized. I didn’t have a business plan. "Munchie Jacks® actually started out as Toffee Jacks. After hearing customers say, 'I could munch on these all day long,' the name and the cookie size changed twice as the brand evolved. The packaging and design changed three times too, with the final update driven by growing sales and demand."

At the beginning I baked after work and on weekends, and I was pulling 20+ extra hours a week in my kitchen and then delivered, and oddly, I loved it. It felt amazing. Exhausting, but thrilling. "I know it sounds crazy, but something about packing orders at midnight felt like an out-of-body experience. I just couldn’t believe I was actually doing this.. People were buying my cookies and loving them! I just wanted to give all these people a hug. I was ecstatically happy!"and I can still feel those emotions to this day. "That joy hasn’t left me

it still lights me up." When I think back to that time, one moment stands out. My kitchen scale had finally given out, and without me saying much, my two boys away at college surprised me with a new one: a OHAUS kitchen scale. It wasn’t just a practical gift. It felt like their way of staying close, supporting me in something they knew I was passionate about.

In 2017, I started selling Munchie Jacks® my little oat-packed cookies at the Art of Santa Cruz a local store and a local hotel, The Hilton, where they were used as corporate giveaways for clients. In 2018, I was on the shelves at Whole Foods Market in California. In 2019, three representatives from Google (including someone from Health & Safety) visited my home kitchen for a site inspection. I was so nervous, I had to stop myself from overthinking. But three days later, I was approved as a vendor.

In 2024, after relocating to Pennsylvania, I became the first Limited Food Establishment (LFE) in the state approved to produce and sell vanilla extract, licensed by the PA Department of Agriculture. That moment reminded me how much can grow from humble beginnings if you’re willing to do the work and stay open to the journey.
